Peds emergency med physician, digestive diseases specialist, neuromuscular fellow join UMMC faculty

Medical Center leadership is proud to announce the following additions to its faculty and leadership staff.

Emem Aitken, M.D.

Dr. Emem Aitken, a pediatric emergency medicine physician, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of pediatrics. She has been at UMMC since April 2018, initially serving in a locum tenens position in the pediatric emergency department, before joining the faculty in January.

After receiving her B.S. in zoology with a pre-med emphasis from Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, in 2001, Aitken served as a research assistant and lab manager at Meharry Medical College, Nashville, Tennessee, from 2002-04 before earning her M.D. at Meharry in 2008. She then completed a pediatrics residency at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine-Chattanooga from 2008-11 and a pediatric emergency medicine fellowship at the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center, Oklahoma City, from 2012-15.

Aitken gained experience as a pediatric emergency department physician at Children’s Hospital at Erlanger from 2011-12. She then served as pediatric medical director and staff physician at Doctors Hospital of Augusta, Georgia, from 2015-18 after completing her pediatric emergency medicine fellowship.

An active member of the American College of Emergency Physicians and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, she has given a number of conference and poster presentations.

Sarah C. Glover, D.O.

Dr. Sarah C. Glover, a tenure track associate professor and director of the IBF Program at the University of Florida at Gainesville, has joined the Medical Center faculty as a professor of medicine and director of the Division of Digestive Diseases.

After receiving her B.A. in chemistry from Seattle Pacific University, Washington, in 1994, Glover earned her D.O. at Midwestern University, Downers Grove, Illinois, in 1998. She then had an internal medicine internship from 1998-99 and an internal medicine residency from 1999-2001 at the University of Illinois Hospital, Chicago; a gastroenterology fellowship in 2001 at the University of Florida, Gainesville; and a gastroenterology fellowship from 2002-04 at the University of Illinois Hospital.

A staff physician at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, Chicago, Illinois, and an attending physician at the University of Illinois Hospital, Chicago, for six years and a staff physician at the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center, Gainesville, Florida, and an attending physician at Shands/University of Florida Health Hospital for another eight years, Glover joined the University of Illinois at Chicago faculty in 2004 as an assistant professor of medicine and also served as an assistant professor of bioengineering. In 2011, she joined the University of Florida at Gainesville faculty as an assistant professor of medicine and earned a promotion to associate professor of medicine in 2013.

A fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association and an active member of the American College of Gastroenterology and the American Osteopathic Association, among other professional organizations, Glover has served as a journal reviewer for a number of scientific publications. She has given more than 60 invited presentations nationally and is the author or coauthor of 40 articles in refereed journals and 84 abstracts.

Her clinical practice focuses on inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis, and allergic gastrointestinal disorders, and her research interest focuses on innate immune mechanisms of gut inflammation.

Saurabh Shukla, M.D.

Dr. Saurabh Shukla, recently a neuromuscular fellow at Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami, Florida, has joined the Medical Center faculty as an assistant professor of neurology.

After earning his M.D. at Medical College Baroda, Maharaja Sayajirao University, Gujarat, India, in 2010, Shukla had a cardiology observership at Lenoxhill Hospital, New York City, and a neurology elective at State University of New York, Buffalo, and was a visiting fellow in the Stem Cells and Stroke Lab at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, from 2010-11. He then had a transitional year internship at Lincoln Medical Center, Bronx, New York, from 2012-13, a neurology residency in the Partners Neurology Program at Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, from 2013-16, and a neuromuscular fellowship at Jackson Memorial Hospital from 2017-18.

Shukla gained experience as a private practice physician in Vadodara, India. An active member of the American Academy of Neurology, the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine and the Medical Council of India, his clinical interests include neuromuscular medicine and neurology, immunomodulatory treatment for myasthenia gravis and immune mediated demyelinating disorders and nerve conduction studies and EMG waveforms in clinical practice.

His research interests include genetics in neuromuscular disorders, inclusion body myositis in HIV patients and myasthenia gravis in patients with concomitant obstructive sleep apnea.
